Hello, and a warm welcome to our Year 1 class page. Here you will find useful information and resources to help you gain a clearer understanding of your child's learning in Year 1 and how best to support them at home. This includes our curriculum map, which provides a long-term overview of learning throughout the year, and our class timetable which will give you an understanding of what a day in Year 1 looks like. We cover some fantastic topics over the year including: The World Around Me, Hot & Cold, WW1 and All About Me.
We are really enjoying working with your children on their learning journey and watching them grow and develop. Your continued support at home is really beneficial and highly appreicated by the whole Year 1 team. If there is anything you have questions or concerns about, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Key information for Year 1:
- P.E. days are on a Wednesday. Please wear correct P.E. uniform to school rather than school uniform on this day. Earrings are not allowed during P.E. sessions for safety reasons, please remove them in the morning before coming to school.
- Your child should read at home at least four times each week, please record all sessions in their reading record when they have read at home as rewards are given.
- Spellings will be given each week and will be tested each Wednesday. Please support your child with practising these at home.

Phonics Check
Our school has chosen Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised as our systematic, synthetic phonics (SSP) programme to teach early reading and spelling.
In June of Year 1, the children will undertake a statutory assessment called the phonics screening check. This consists of 40 words to read (20 real words and 20 nonsense words). For the past few years, the pass mark has been around 32 out of 40, but we will not know exactly the pass mark until the phonics assessment has been completed. The short assessment determines how well each child can use the phonics skills they have learned in Reception and Year 1. By the end of Year 1, pupils should have learned everything in phases1-5. More details will be given throughout the year and parents will be invited in for a phonics workshop.
