Welcome to our School Council 2024!
Staff leader: Mrs Lord
At St. Marie's Catholic Primary School, we respect and value the fundamental British Values of democracy and ensure the views and opinions of all our pupils are expressed and heard. One of the ways pupils can express their ideas is via the School Council.
What is the School Council?
- Our School Council represents the views of all our pupils. It gives our pupils the opportunity to make their voices heard and feel part of the whole school community.
- Our School Council helps to make changes and improvements to try and make our school a nicer place for everyone.
- When we meet, everyone gets a chance to speak and when we’ve finished we vote on the best ideas.
What will our School Council do?
Our School Council meets monthly with Mrs Lord (School Council Teacher representative) to share ideas, discuss views, review school improvements and identify areas to develop further in the coming year. The School Council may be set tasks such as:
- Collecting information or new ideas from their class.
- Asking their class their opinions.
- Presenting to classes or the whole school.
- Collecting information from their teachers.
- Given opportunities to lead assemblies and invite 'Guest Councillors', who will join us each term, to allow more children the opportunity to be involved.
Election Process
- Here at St Marie's Catholic Primary School, all pupils are invited to stand as School Council representatives and are voted for fairly and democratically by their peers.
- Before they are voted for, candidates give a speech in an assembly explaining why they want to be on the School Council and what ideas they have to bring. Children then vote for their new elected members.
- Each class across the age ranges, starting from Year 1 through to Year 6, choose two representatives from each year group that have been elected by their peers.
- The Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary are then voted for by the elected members of the School Council.
We believe our School Council will be very effective in helping bring about positive changes in the life of our school!
If you have any ideas or suggestions to help improve our school, please see your class council reps, who will bring your suggestions to the next School Council meeting.
